Gmail Gemini Updates & Persado’s Perspective

A breakdown of current feature available and anticipated impact (it's minimal)!

There’s been a lot of buzz about Gmail’s AI Updates. While we can't directly measure impact on AI Inbox yet, there's reason to believe Persado-generated copy is well-suited to this environment. AI relevance models are designed to surface language with strong engagement signals, which aligns with what Persado is built to generate: copy validated against historical performance patterns.

Read more below for more details on feature availability and key takeaways. We'll continue monitoring as the feature rolls out more broadly, and gather data from testing once key features are available to all Gmail users.

Feature Availability Status

Broadly Available to Consumers

Google has made several of Gmail's core AI features available to personal account holders at no cost, particularly for users in the United States. Regular consumers can currently access the following without a business account:1

  • Help Me Write: Allows you to draft entire emails from scratch using prompts or "Polish" your existing drafts.

  • Suggested Replies: An evolution of Smart Replies that uses the context of your conversation to generate more detailed responses in your personal tone.

  • Email Thread Summaries: For long conversations, a bulleted AI Overview card appears at the top to summarize the key points.

Anticipated Business Impact: 🟢 Minimal.

These features are geared towards quality-of-life improvements for the average consumer, and don’t change the current way emails are prioritized and sorted in the inbox.

Premium Consumer Features

Google offers individual paid plans (separate from business/Workspace accounts) through Google One for consumers who want access to the following capabilities:

  • AI Overviews in Gmail Search: This allows users to ask natural language questions like "What is my latest offer from Silverton Bank?" instead of searching for keywords. This is currently available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

  • AI Inbox: A new, smarter view that prioritizes important emails (like bills or reminders) and highlights "to-dos." This is currently rolling out to AI Ultra subscribers and trusted testers.

  • Proofread: Offers advanced suggestions for tone, style, and conciseness beyond standard grammar checks.

Anticipated Business Impact: 🟢 Minimal.

While we can’t get an exact number of what percentage of consumers are using AI Pro or Ultra, we estimate this most likely impacts less than 1% of the consumer Gmail audience, so the practical effect on campaign performance should be minimal.

AI Inbox Search Sorting

In March 2025, Google rolled out AI-driven relevance ranking and prioritization for users with personal Gmail accounts. Inbox search results are now sorted by relevance instead of chronological order, but users can toggle between “most relevant” and “most recent” results based on their preference.

Anticipated Business Impact: 🟢 Minimal.

Gmail has always relied on intelligent sorting systems — including features like Primary/Promotions tabs and Priority Inbox — that use behavioral signals to determine which emails are most relevant to a given user.

From that perspective, these new AI features represent more of an evolution of Gmail’s existing inbox intelligence rather than a fundamental shift in how marketing emails are evaluated.

Because Gmail’s ranking and prioritization systems are proprietary, there is limited visibility into the exact signals used. However, historically Gmail has relied heavily on user engagement signals, such as:

  • Opens

  • Clicks

  • Replies

  • Searches for a sender

  • Moving emails between folders or tabs.

As Gmail introduces more AI-driven prioritization, these types of engagement signals are likely to remain important indicators of relevance.

What this Means for Marketers

For brands, the core strategy remains largely unchanged: sending relevant, engaging content that users interact with.

In fact, if Gmail is increasingly using AI to surface emails that users find valuable, then improving engagement becomes even more important. Emails that consistently drive interaction are more likely to reinforce sender relevance over time.

This means brands should continue focusing on:

  • Delivering content that audiences want to engage with

  • Maintaining healthy lists and minimizing sends to disengaged recipients

  • Optimizing subject lines, messaging, and content to drive interaction.

While marketers cannot directly influence Gmail’s AI systems, optimizing email performance and engagement remains one of the most effective ways to align with how modern inbox systems prioritize content.

So continuing to use Persado to optimize your email engagement and performance remains one of the most important things you can do!

Key Takeaways

  • Gmail’s Gemini AI features are primarily designed to improve the user experience, like summarizing emails or helping users navigate their inbox.

  • Gmail has always used intelligent sorting (e.g., Promotions tab and Priority Inbox), so AI prioritization is more of an evolution than a major shift.

  • Gmail’s algorithms are a black box, so no vendor outside Google can definitively say how emails are ranked or prioritized.

  • Historically, engagement signals — opens, clicks, replies, and interactions — have played a major role in determining relevance.

  • Because of that, optimizing emails for engagement and relevance remains the best strategy, regardless of AI changes.
